10 Dog-Friendly Things to Do in North Norfolk This Autumn: The Ultimate Bucket List
There’s something particularly magical about North Norfolk in the Autumn.
The summer crows have begun to disappear, the beaches become quieter, the leaves turn golden, and there’s suddenly a very good excuse to spend an afternoon wrapped up in a cosy pub with a roast dinner.
For me, autumn is one of the best times to visit North Norfolk with a dog for these very reasons. You can enjoy long beach walks without worrying about hot weather, explore beautiful woodland covered in crunchy leaves, and of course, avoid the summer crowds!
Whether you’re planning an autumnal weekend away or looking for inspiration for your next North Norfolk adventure, here are 10 dog-friendly things to add to your North Norfolk autumn bucket list.
1. Soak up the Stars Hollow vibes at Drove Orchards
If autumn had a personality, I’m fairly sure it would live at Drove Orchards.
Located near Thornham, Drove Orchards is one of those places that feels made for an autumn day out. Think pumpkins, cosy farm shop vibes, seasonal produce, and that slightly magical feeling that makes you want to put on a chunky jumper and pretend you’re leaving in Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls fans will know what I’m on about here).
It’s the perfect place to wander around on a crisp autumn day before picking up some delicious local treats to take back to your holiday cottage.
I highly recommend tagging this on to a walk around Thornham harbour where you can stop off at The Orange Tree for a drink or bite to eat. Here’s my favourite route.
2. Spot grey seals along the North Norfolk coast
Autumn is a brilliant time for wildlife spotting along the North Norfolk coast. And seeing grey seals should definitely be on your bucket list.
Between September and October, large numbers begin gathering and hauling out on the beaches for pupping, and in November you might even get the chance to see a newborn pup.
One of my favourite ways to see these animals is on a dog-friendly seal cruise where you’ll get to see them from the water. Beans Boats welcome well behaved dogs on leads.
Seeing seals in their natural habitat is one of those experiences that makes a North Norfolk trip feel really special – and your dog will probably enjoy the smells and sounds from the boat adventure as much as you.
Just remember to give wildlife plenty of space and always follow local guidance when visiting seal colonies.
3. Watch the sunrise at Wells-next-the-Sea beach
Yes, getting up early on holiday might sound slightly offensive to some but trust me on this one.
Watching the sunrise over Wells-next-the-Sea Beach is one of the most magical things you can do in North Norfolk.
Wrap up warm, grab a coffee, and head down to the beach with your dog while the rest of the world is asleep.
The huge expanse of sand, colourful beach huts and wide-open skies make Wells-next-the-Sea one of my favourite places in North Norfolk at any time of year, but there’s something really special about seeing it first thing in the morning.
Plus by the time autumn rolls around sunrise isn’t until after 7 am, which means you won’t have to wake up at stupid o’ clock to experience it.
Afterwards? Breakfast. Obviously. I recommend The Two Magpies on the Quay who sell some delectable goodies.
4. Crunch through the golden leaves at Holt Country Park
Nothing says autumn quite like a woodland walk surrounded by crunchy leaves.
Holt Country Park is a fabulous spot for an autumn dog walk, with easy to follow woodland trails, towering trees, and plenty of opportunities for your dog to investigate approximately every single leaf on the ground.
The colours are particularly beautiful during the autumn months, making it the perfect place for a slow walk, before enjoying the lovely Georgian town of Holt.
If you’re lucky enough you might even spot one of the elusive wild Dartmoor ponies who roam the heathland round here. I’ve never been lucky enough myself but the experience would be absolutely magical.
5. Explore Holkham Hall’s beautiful Walled Garden
Autumn is one of the prettiest times to visit Holkham, when the estate begins to transform with rich autumn colours.
The Holkham Walled Garden is a beautiful place to explore, with Victorian greenhouses, ornamental gardens and a working kitchen garden surrounded by historic walls.
They often have seasonal displays, and autumn is no exception, with pumpkins and seasonal goodies usually lined up which make the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot with your dog. Dogs are welcome across the park and walled garden too.
6. Enjoy a hearty roast dinner at The Three Horseshoes in Warham
Is there anything better after an autumn dog walk than sitting down somewhere cosy with a proper roast dinner?
I don’t think so.
The Three Horseshoes in Warham is one of those wonderfully traditional North Norfolk pubs that feels particularly perfect during the colder months.
It’s gorgeously cosy inside and the Sunday Roasts are to die for with generous sizes and oozing with gravy.
Seriously though is it even an autumn weekend if you haven’t enjoyed a long walks followed by roast potatoes?
7. Take the steam train from Holt to Sheringham
There’s something about steam trains that feels wonderfully nostalgic.
The North Norfolk Railway, also known as the Poppy Line, runs between Holt and Sheringham, taking you through some beautiful North Norfolk countryside.
It’s a lovely way to see the area from a different perspective, particularly when the trees are starting to change colour.
And once you arrive in Sheringham, you can explore the town, head down to the beach and find yourself something delicious to eat.
You can find out more and check the latest timetable on the North Norfolk Railway website.
8. Eat a warm crumble from the Crumble Crib in Sheringham
This might be the most autumnal thing on the list.
After exploring Sheringham, head to Crumble Crib for a warm bowl of joy.
You choose your crumble, add your toppings, and enjoy the ultimate cosy autumn treat – I highly recommend after a blustery beach walk (dogs are allowed on the main beach here from 1 October).
9. Explore Felbrigg Hall and Estate
If you’re looking for a proper autumnal walk, Felbrigg Hall should definitely be on your list.
The estate has hundreds of acres to explore, including beautiful woodland filled with a variety of trees, which means plenty of autumn colour.
Dogs are welcome across the much of the estate, and there are plenty of clearly marked walking routes to explore.
It’s owned by the National Trust, so it’s basically the law to enjoy a cup of tea and scone in their dog-friendly café after too.
10. Find the Banksy at Cromer
For something a little different, head to Cromer and see if you can find the famous Banksy artwork.
The piece appeared as part of Banksy’s Great British Spraycation series and has become one of those quirkly little sights that’s fund to seek out while exploring the town.
Make a day of it by wandering around Cromer’s independent shops, walking along the coastline here, or heading down the iconic pier.
Of course it’s only right to end the day with fish and chips enjoying the view.
So there you have it - 10 things to add to your North Norfolk autumn bucket list. Now all you need is your dog, a warm coat and an excuse to book a trip.
